Summary

SAD story, but great history on dirty thirties。。。ends sadly。。but keeps you reading

Loved this book。 Learned a lot about the time in history, enjoyed the characters。 Hard to put down。

I didn’t love this book until the end but now I think this is one of my favorite books。 The development of main character Elsa and her daughter really spoke to me and was wonderfully done。 Bravo。

For everyone saying this is a piece of “Communist Propaganda” let’s relax a little。 This book was so beautifully written I was moved to tears multiple times and could feel my heart shattering slowly in multiple chapters。 The pain and despair felt by the farmers in the Dust Bowl is so strongly portrayed I could almost feel my shoes wasting away and the dust in my lungs。 The author sticks so true to life in the ‘30。 You can tell she clearly did her research。 As for the Communism。 Yes, it was a lit For everyone saying this is a piece of “Communist Propaganda” let’s relax a little。 This book was so beautifully written I was moved to tears multiple times and could feel my heart shattering slowly in multiple chapters。 The pain and despair felt by the farmers in the Dust Bowl is so strongly portrayed I could almost feel my shoes wasting away and the dust in my lungs。 The author sticks so true to life in the ‘30。 You can tell she clearly did her research。 As for the Communism。 Yes, it was a little strong at some points but it’s FACTUAL。 The strikes and protests actually happened and the communist ideology was discussed and fought for。 It never felt out of place in this book, since it was all true, and really does relate to today’s world。 Highly recommend this book and HIGHLY recommend the audio book。 The reader did such an amazing job。 。。。more

Beautiful story

I have never been that much into stories about the Dust Bowl, as I find that time period rather dry (no pun intended)。 However, I found this book fascinating! All the more poignant to me as I am a native Texan, and I was driving around the central California valleys in which some of the scenes take place。

Picked this up because I enjoyed The Nightingale。 The Four Winds felt a bit dragged at times and not nearly "as strong" as The Nightingale despite clear similarities in the lead main character, a strong female suffering from hardship albeit much different than WWII。 Picked this up because I enjoyed The Nightingale。 The Four Winds felt a bit dragged at times and not nearly "as strong" as The Nightingale despite clear similarities in the lead main character, a strong female suffering from hardship albeit much different than WWII。 。。。more

The first half was a little slow going。 This is a long book, but finally got so interesting, the process sped up。 A different take on the American Dust Bowl, it was very human and brought new insight into that time period。 My heart ached for the characters as they struggled。

I loved the setting and the premise, but it was sooo repetitive and boring。 Way too drawn out, with very little actually happening through the second half of the book。 The character of the son was completely irritating, written like he was 3 instead of 8, and the daughter could have been much more complex。 Overall a big let down。

Maybe the Okayest book I’ve ever read。 Gave me something to care about with a trod-on heroine up against the odds but my issues with this story and it’s telling stacked too high for enjoyment。 My issues started when Elsa was described as tall, slender and pale, with blue eyes, long blonde hair and sharp cheekbones。 Only, she and others then repeatedly refer to her as unattractive。 What’s that thing judge Judy says? Don’t pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining。 Let’s talk one dimensional characters。 Elsa is a stoic。 Rafe is a dreamer。 Loreda is also a dreamer, though neither of them can tell you exactly what it is they dream of doing- just that they know Elsa is in the way。 Ant is a little boy。 That’s about all you get。 Prepare for many, many more pages reinforcing this。 Sense of place - Elsa supposedly loves the land she inhabits, but can she tell the reader a damn thing about it? Any farmer could tell you about their land in unending detail。 The size, contours, boundaries, the soil, crops, seasons。 Nah, just a lot of feelings。 Repetition。 How many times is the word DUST used in this book? How many times do dire situations and circumstances need to be drawn up? We get it, things are bad for Elsa。 Indistinguishable character voice。 Elsa talks of Rafe filling Loreda’s head with dreams。 Surely her headstrong daughter would have her own perspective on her sense of captivity? Nope。 She’s got nothing, just a head full of dreams courtesy of her father, and no unique ideas or talents of her own。 Plot beats and pacing。 Nothing happens for chapters on end, so when something finally does happen you assume it will Mean Something or in the very least, drive the story forward。 Not really。 In the version I read, I was also (accidentally) treated to a character death that was yet to happen in the storyline。。。 great editing。 Still, I’d have hung in with this book just for the sheer justice of Elsa hitting her stride and finding comeuppance in the world that scorned her endlessly。 But of course, this book is set during the Great Depression so there’s hardly a lot of Winners。 Still, there’s a chance of a character arc, right? 。。。。。 ehhh。。。。。The finale did not feel like any sort of character progression for me, more a scenario of extreme duress where Elsa finally makes decisions otherwise unlike her。 It had no emotional impact for me whatsoever。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book kinda sucked! It is very well written- Kristen Hannah is truly amazing。 All of her books make you feel strongly and engage you to the point where you feel like you are in the story and forget you’re reading… but this story just stunk。 It was so utterly hopelessly depressing until page 300 or so and then there’s a little bit of hope in the form of Jack。 But then, Elsa and that ending! I hated how it ended and for the depressing tone of 90% of the book I rate it 3 stars。

This book is fictional but based on real events that happened in America in the 1920s and 30s。 The main character Elsa grows up in Texas (part of the "Dust Bowl") and then has to decide whether to continue battling the dust or move on and try her luck in California (the so-called "land of milk and honey")。 It's a great read and I really enjoyed it but it loses half a star for editing issues ⭐⭐⭐⭐+ This book is fictional but based on real events that happened in America in the 1920s and 30s。 The main character Elsa grows up in Texas (part of the "Dust Bowl") and then has to decide whether to continue battling the dust or move on and try her luck in California (the so-called "land of milk and honey")。 It's a great read and I really enjoyed it but it loses half a star for editing issues ⭐⭐⭐⭐+ 。。。more

I made it about a third of the way through but it was just too depressing and not what I need right now in my life!

Loveddd this book。 So powerful。 Very few books have made me cry but this was one of them。 Although not a true story, I’m sure the story line was very similar to many peoples real life experiences during the depression era。 This gave some really good insight into the sheer magnitude of how bad it was for so many。

Jeanne Haselkorn

Well written, fast moving plot, well-developed characters, and enveloping historical context。 And if nothing else, the second half of the book will teach you empathy。 I would read another of hers if I were guaranteed not to bawl so much at times。 :)

Jen Kakuske

A constant stream of tears at the end。 So good。 Loved this

Difficult to keep reading at many points in the book as it was so depressing。 Basically if you have read “Grapes of Wrath “ you don’t red to read this one。 Although it did end powerfully which makes me think it is 3。5 instead of 3 stars。

Michelle

I really enjoyed the character of Elsa and the relationship between Elsa and her daughter。 Very much love reading Kristin Hannah’s work!

Stop what you are doing right now and read this book。

Powerful look into a tragic period of American history I was totally immersed in the story of an American historical period about which I knew almost nothing。 So hard to believe that such suffering could happen in a country based in the democratic idea of fairness and equality。

I started out liking this novel a great deal。 I did not know much about the Dust Bowl, and the incredible struggle of the people who lived there, and the migration of so many to California。 However, I agree with reviewers who found the novel to be seriously flawed。 I found the character of the daughter, Loreda, to be unbelievable in the time period of the novel。 She seemed more like a snotty adolescent of our era。 The romance between Elsa and the Communist labor organizer seemed unlikely given I started out liking this novel a great deal。 I did not know much about the Dust Bowl, and the incredible struggle of the people who lived there, and the migration of so many to California。 However, I agree with reviewers who found the novel to be seriously flawed。 I found the character of the daughter, Loreda, to be unbelievable in the time period of the novel。 She seemed more like a snotty adolescent of our era。 The romance between Elsa and the Communist labor organizer seemed unlikely given the circumstances。 I thought the ending was maudlin。 。。。more

I didn’t care for it at first but I’m glad I stuck with it。 Elsas character development is so lovely to watch as is Loreda’s。 What a heartbreaking story。

Really 4。5 stars。 Truly one of the best Kristin Hannah books I have read。 I have always enjoyed the stories of strength told from the Great Depression, and this one was so beautifully written and captured the American Dream。

I listened to the audiobook and highly recommend this if you are just diving into historical fiction。 I tried reading it at first but was very slow paced, once I started reading the book I was able to get into the book。 I liked the book but feel like it was bit over hyped。 This is my first Kristin Hannah book and I do love her wiring so I will be giving her other books a try。 I did enjoy how we saw many years go by and that the relationship between mother and daughter grow。

A character needs to relay her strengths and inhibitions, fears and inadequacies through action- the main character continued to think aloud her feelings of not being deserving, being weak, her feelings etc。 I found this exhausting! Three of K。 Hannah's books (have read about 8) I have really liked; especially The Great Alone。 This one, not so much。 Feel like the last several are a recipe being repeated。 A character needs to relay her strengths and inhibitions, fears and inadequacies through action- the main character continued to think aloud her feelings of not being deserving, being weak, her feelings etc。 I found this exhausting!
